Low Stakes Assessment in Online Teaching

I picked up this fantastic idea off Twitter for remote learning yesterday and gave it a try during today’s lessons. A very simple idea but extremly effective to check understanding and engagement. Of course I would prefer they were able to share responses over the mic but naturally this is not always possible.

  1. When you ask a question ask students to type their answer into chat box but not to click enter yet.
  2. Give the students time to answer your question and then select one or two students at random asking them to hit enter. When their answers appear I break down and discuss their answers provided.
  3. Following this I tell the rest of the class to click enter and share their answers so that they don’t feel their effort was wasted.
This worked so well as it very clearly shows who is actively participating in lesson and students realise they need to answer incase they are chosen rather than sitting there not doing the work!
